My entry into film started with the classics; I grew up captivated by the suspense and visual language of Hitchcock while watching his films with my mum. That early fascination turned into action at 16, when I joined a short film summer camp at my local Cinema Museum. Getting my hands on the equipment and seeing the process behind the scenes (including a bit of acting!) was the turning point – I knew right then that I wanted to keep doing that. I committed to studying a degree covering film, photography and design, followed by a master’s in cinematography, and here I am 18 years later, working in what I love.
What’s the most exciting project you’ve ever worked on?
It’s difficult to choose just one project from so many years of work, but a highlight as a camera operator would have to be working on Billy & Dom Eat the World. As a fan of The Lord of the Rings, it was a real ‘pinch-me’ moment to collaborate with them while travelling across the world.
That said, my heart always returns to narrative features. Stepping into the role of Director of Photography for two feature films has been the most rewarding challenge of my career.
What is your favourite film?
It’s incredibly hard to choose just one favourite film, and my taste has evolved significantly over the years, but one that has really stayed with me is Alcarràs. It’s a Catalan film with roots close to my hometown, directed by Carla Simón, which uses non-professional actors and highly sensory cinematography, leaning into a documentary style of filmmaking.
What golden rule do you follow as a freelancer?
My golden rule has always been to be adaptable, to be the person who stays calm and brings solutions when things don’t go to plan. Having worked in many different environments, with varying crew sizes and budgets, I find it easy to adapt to last-minute changes.
What skill makes you stand out from other freelancers?
I have been in almost everyone else’s shoes on crew. I have worked as a gaffer, a camera assistant, a photographer and Camera Operator and Director of Photography. I also self-shoot quite a lot and I think this allows me to bring a lot of versatility and knowledge into every shoot.
